Sometimes a random act of kindness touches our lives, and for that moment we are filled with an exhilaration of thankfulness to that individual or persons for giving us that intangible feeling that people REALLY do care. That is exactly what happened to me over 43 years ago. I received an anonymous envelope with 20 $100 bills in it and a note, "Use this for college." Signed. ...your guardian angel. I had been "Bumped!"
,
In my late 20's I figured out the identity of my guardian angel. He was the postmaster in my hometown of Farmville, NC. who knew EVERYONE! His name was Bumpass Humphrey, but everyone called him Bump! How did I know? After several years of coming home to visit I would run into friends or people at church and one of the first things they would say would be, "Bump asked about you". Our paths crossed intentionally at a wedding event. I told him i knew it was him. A big hug and a few tears and the rest is history. I told him because of his act of kindness I too would help as many as I could in my lifetime with the same passion as he. I would later find out he had had helped many people in my hometown giving of his time and money.
Bump left us in 2007 at the age of 88, but his presence has been felt in the lives of many, especially mine. And though he is no longer here, his presence and passion remain in The Bump Experiment which was created in 2008. His one act of kindness has been multiplied too many times to count by those of us who we call BUMPERS! When you give of your time or money we call it "Bumping it up!" When you are the recipient of such kindness, "You have been 'BUMPED'." It only takes ONE person to care. Be that person. Make a ripple...create a wave!
